Final Project Propolsal

November 15, 2007 at 7:47 pm (Uncategorized)

1. For this project I wantto merge leisure/labor into a simulator that plays on the idea of “America’s Army” as a training program, except the simulation will be of a sweatshop factory worker. It will be a game that trains the player how to be a good sweatshop worker. Within the game the player will have to assemble items for the duration of the workday(Maybe there will “levels” of the duration as part of the training, 1st day will be 3 hours straight next day 5 and so on). They would not be able to stop for more then a min otherwise they will fail. They will be allowed one 5 min bathroom break. At the end of the work day it will calculate how much they earn based on how much items they made and will also show how much that item is actually going to be sold for.
2. If this was serious then the game would be made available in countries like China and India for ages 10 and above so they can prepare for a job as a sweatshop worker. Otherwise this project for people in this class and for people who play flash games when they’re bored and to factory workers.
3. Will need to do some research on conditions in sweatshop and how much workers get paid and the types of things that are assembled.
4. Will be made using flash.

Project Proposal

November 6, 2007 at 3:47 pm (Uncategorized)

The product is a super lamp with a built in alarm clock and speakers to wake you up in the morning. The lamp can be set to turn on when the alarm goes. It also comes with motion sensors that will turn the light on when someone enters the room(this can be turned on and off). Then at night it can become a party lamp with multicolor flashing lights and play music from the speakers. It can play music from radio/cd; and your ipod can also connect to it.

Usability should be pretty simple most of the controls will be similar to those found on regular lamps, speakers and alarm clocks just set up a bit differently. It will come with a manual.

This product would probably be geared towards 18yrs old and above with no specific education level. Learning to use the product should be pretty simple.

It would be sold in most countries such as US, Canada, Japan and European countries. Probably in different furniture stores and/or department stores.

Campus Derive/Intervention

November 5, 2007 at 5:37 pm (Uncategorized)

1. Group Members-Jason, Scott, Katerina

2. For the intervention we made signs that said “Door under maitenance: Please use other door” and “This door is not closed”(with the “not” done in much smaller font). We put the signs on the CFA doors except on 1 door. One 1 set of double doors we put the please use other door sign with the arrows on the sign facing eachother.  The objective of the intervention was to see how people would react to the signs. Whether they would read what it said or ignore them completely.

3. We 1st tried to do this with the doors in the SU but a staff person came out and told us to take down the signs because we’re not allowed to put up stuff like that. Some people broke the rules by reading the signs but walking through the doors that said “please use other door” anyways.

4. I was kinda surprised that more people didn’t ignore the signs.

5. Majority of people avoided the doors with the signs complelety and went through the door without a sign.

6. I think it would have been more effective is this was done with the SU doors or during a time when more people we going in and out. Also might have worked better if the signs we put up were a bit more offical looking, maybe if they had the UB logo.

7. The signs got attention from people because there usually isn’t anything on those doors and a few people were amused by it. There was also one guy who was coming from the right and walked all the way to the farleft door without the sign even though going through the right doors would have been more conveinant for him.

Second Life Project

November 1, 2007 at 7:14 pm (Uncategorized)

For my second life project I want to create a mini garden made out of recyclable materials. Such as trees made out of cardboard with paper leaves, I think that would be kinda of ironic.
